Perhaps you are not aware that one of our neighbors is running for the NC House of Representatives. Joe John lives in Black Horse Run (and his Republican rival, the incumbent, Marilyn Avila also lives in Black Horse Run).

Joe is uncommonly qualified to serve in the legislature. Joe served for nearly 25 years as a judge, including as a Guilford County District Court Judge, Chief District Court Judge, Resident Superior Court Judge, Associate Judge of the North Carolina Court of Appeals, and other judicial offices too long to add here. From 2011 to 2014, he served as Director of the State Crime Lab.

NC General Assembly House Bill 2 (HB2)

This post is about the new NC General Assembly House Bill 2: Public Facilities Privacy & Security Act.

The Republican-controlled General Assembly of North Carolina has done it again: alienated the state’s own residents as well as people across the nation by passing yet another law that allows discrimination of our LGBT community.

The new state law bars local governments from extending civil rights protections to gay and transgender people and prohibits transgender people from using public bathrooms according to their gender identity.

The law also prohibits county and city governments from requiring local businesses to pay a minimum wage above the current state level of $7.25 per hour.

Much has been written about this new law by both the North Carolina press and the national press, putting North Carolina in a very negative spotlight. All the major North Carolina newspapers have expressed scathing criticism of the new law:
